A Brief Study of Nigella sativa (Kalonji): A Unique Immunomodulator of Unani Medicine | Chapter 12 | Issues and Developments in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 4

Throughout its thousands of years of practise, the Unani System of Medicine has accumulated a wealth of medical knowledge. Herbal medications are becoming increasingly important in modern science, as new scientific information on their safety and usefulness emerges on a regular basis. The pandemic of COVID-19 has emphasised the urgent need for immunomodulators, as inadequate immune modulation is one of the elements that contributes to the disease's aetiology and leads to poor outcomes in COVID-19 patients. Innovative methods and extensive research on immunomodulatory natural products, plants, and their extracts are being pursued in order to generate a novel immunomodulatory agent to complement current chemotherapies. Kalonji (Nigella sativa Linn) has risen to the top of the evidence-based herbal medicine rankings. It has been discovered that Thymoquine, the principal bioactive component of Kalonji's essential oil, is responsible for the majority of the plant's therapeutic benefits. Even on COVID-19, many investigations have shown that N. sativa is a strong immunomodulator and antiviral drug. To highlight the notion of Manaat (Immunity) in the Unani System of Medicine, this article attempts to describe recent scientific work carried out by modern scientists on immunomodulator actions of the most renowned Unani single drug-Kalonji seeds. This will aid in the development of a powerful immunomodulator to tackle the horrors of the COVID-19 pandemic in the near future. In this direction, we can incorporate the complete Kalonji seed or Raughan Kalonji for future comparison studies with Thymoquine on immunomodulation and antiviral studies, as per Unani medicine's concept.
