Endoscopic Procedures in ENT and Aerosolization during Covid-19 Pandemic: An Approach towards Concepts and Guidelines | Chapter 21 | Issues and Developments in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 8

The purpose of this study is to address various endoscopic principles and guidelines as well as the risk of aerosolization. During normal ENT examinations and endoscopic procedures, otolaryngologists are more prone to inhale aerosols. Routine operations, such as ENT endoscopy, are regarded as the most aerosol-generating procedures, and should be avoided unless absolutely required or urgent at this time of Covid-19 epidemic. Because of the small particle size and long travel time of airborne aerosols, health care professionals must employ special PPE and barriers to prevent Covid-19 transmission. ENT endoscopy in awake patients with proper topical local anaesthetic preparation has been recommended in studies. Sprays should not be used; instead, pledgets should be properly placed to provide enough decongestion and anaesthetic. Wearing a N95 mask with a face shield or full PPE, thorough cleaning of the entire endoscope after removal with standard disinfectants, decontamination of the endoscopy room after each procedure, and proper disposal of contaminated waste products are some of the most common guidelines currently recommended by health authorities around the world. Information and advice from various authorities on various diagnostic and treatment procedures is subject to change based on the current local situation and developments of the Covid-19 pandemic, and we should strictly follow the national and local guidelines issued by concerned authorities and keep us up to date on the latest advice available.
