Determining the Role of Unani Medicine in Management of Tinnitus (Taneen)| Chapter 2 | Issues and Developments in Medicine and Medical Research Vol.10

Tinnitus is derived from the Latin word "tinnire," which means "to ring" or "jingle." Patients report hearing a drumming noise or sound in their ears without any external input. These sounds were described by patients as roaring, hissing, swishing, or clicking. Tinnitus is known as Taneen wa Dawi in the unani system, which implies ringing sounds in the ear or a state in which a person hears non-existent voices. "Taneen" denotes "tasht ki khankhnahat," according to Allama Nafees, in which sufferers hear non-existent sound regularly or occasionally. Tinnitus is caused by ghaleez akhlat wa riyah (waste material) being diverted from the brain to the ear, resulting in symptoms such as hunger, dryness, famine, and general weakness. Furthermore, many unani academics linked the symptoms of heaviness in the ear and head to tinnitus, an empty stomach, or starving noises in the ear, and general weakness. Tinnitus is treated with Ilaj-bil-Dawa (pharmacotherapy), Ilaj-bil-Ghiza (dietotherapy), Ilaj-bil-Tadabeer (regimental therapy), and Ilaj-bil-Yad (manual therapy/surgery) in the unani system of medicine. Treatments for tinnitus are extremely difficult to achieve using traditional methods. In this book chapter, we describe or explain a topic that is very useful in the treatment of tinnitus using the unani medical system.
