Variations in Origin of Vertebral Artery and its Clinical Significance | Chapter 19 | Issues and Developments in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 6

 Surgeons must have a thorough understanding of anatomy as well as a comprehension of variances. Great vascular anatomic and morphologic differences are important for diagnostic and surgical operations in the neck and thorax.

The vertebral artery is a branch of the subclavian artery that branches off on both sides from the first segment of the subclavian artery. The vertebral artery has been documented in the literature as coming directly from the arch of the aorta, as a branch of the thyrocervical trunk, or as a branch of the common carotid or external carotid artery, among other possibilities.

Materials and Methods: To observe variations in the origin of the vertebral artery, the study used 30 formalin-fixed cadavers collected from Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College.

The right vertebral artery's origin was consistent in all cases, whereas the left vertebral artery's origin varied.

Conclusions: People with aberrant vertebral artery origins may be more susceptible to cerebrovascular disease.
