Determination of Deep and Superficial Heating Combined with Self Static Calf Stretch Exercise among Adults with Heel Pain and Reduced Ankle Dorsifiexion-A Randomised Controlled Trial | Chapter 04 | Issues and Developments in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 3

The usage of thermotherapy has been used in the field of physical therapy for many years. Patients with heel pain caused by a combination of reasons are still common, necessitating the use of the appropriate technique for treating the pain, allowing muscle stretching and thereby enhancing dorsiflexor range of motion (ROM). This research was also carried out with the goal of eliminating logistical and financial issues for both patients and therapists.

Objective: To determine if short wave diathermy (SWD) or wax therapy improves ankle dorsiflexion and reduces heel pain in patients aged 18 to 35 who have limited ankle dorsiflexion.

Methodology: A hundred volunteers with a dorsiflexion range of motion of less than or equal to 17 degrees were randomly assigned to one of two groups.

Results: The effectiveness of the wax bath and SWD were examined individually, and both showed statistically significant improvements in ROM (group 1 mean – 0.540 and group 2 mean – 3.980 at 95 percent C.I) and pain reduction. When the two therapies were compared, the SWD group gained higher ROM (t – 9.714, P value 0.05) and had less self-perceived pain.

Conclusion: This study shows that deep heating with SWD has a greater influence on increasing dorsiflexion of the ankle joint and reducing pain than wax therapy, and that wax therapy and SWD both have an impact on ROM and perceived pain when used independently.
