Ultrasonography Findings Post Laser Ablation of Breast Carcinoma | Chapter 17 | Issues and Developments in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 4

Introduction: Various technologies have been used to develop minimally invasive treatments for breast cancer. Ablation techniques such as laser, radiofrequency, micro-ablation, and cryo-ablation are the most common.

The advantages of laser ablation include a shorter operation time and real-time tumour imaging.

Between 2008 and 2021, laser ablation of tumours was performed on 12 patients. All of the patients were unwilling to have a formal mastectomy and were classified as Stage 3 by Manchester. The patients were scanned using sonography, and a Tru-Cut biopsy was used to get a histological diagnosis. All of the patients fell under the BIRADS 4 and 5 categories.

The treatment was done with a 60W diode laser under sonography control. The outer extent of ablation was calculated to be 0.5-1.5 cm beyond the tumor's visible edge. With the use of a Pet Scan / Sonography, the lymph nodes were located and laserised in the same way.

The sonography scans were taken right after and at intervals of 2-3 months. PET scans done at three-month intervals for a year backed up the findings.

Conclusions: For necrosing breast cancer, laser ablation is a viable therapy. It has the benefit of not being mutilated or scarred. If there is a recurrence or a fresh occurrence, it can be repeated. The radiological changes that occur following Laser Ablation are quite predictable, and sonologists should be aware of the findings as Laser Ablation becomes more widely accepted as a treatment for breast cancer in many locations around the world.
