Study on Nasal Parameters of Medical Students (n=61) in South Indians: A Clinical Analysis | Chapter 14 | Issues and Developments in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 5

Background: The nose's shape reveals ethnicity, race, age, and sex. The form of the nose is influenced by both genetic and environmental influences. Anthropometric characteristics change with age, gender, and ethnicity, and various writers have attempted to describe normative values that might be used as a guide.

Materials and Methods: The nostril parameters of 61 South Indian medical students (34 females; 27 males) were measured and statistically analysed in this study.

1) Males have a nose width of 3.3 cm, while females have a nose width of 2.9 cm (females).

2) Columella Length: 1.8 cm for males and 1.6 cm for females (females).

3) Columella Width: 0.59 cm for males and 0.57 cm for females (females).

4) Alar Width -0.52 cm for males and 0.45 cm for females (females). 5). In both males and females, the cheek type was the most prevalent form of cheek alar groove, followed by labial and tube types.

Conclusion: All of the measurements can be used to assess nose deformity, plan therapy, and assess the correction accomplished during rhinoplasty after surgery.
