The qualities of the human eye retina, such as space-variant resolution and gaze characters, offer several benefits for a variety of applications that demand a vast field of vision, high resolution, and real-time performance all at the same time. As a result, retina-like sensors and mechanisms have gotten a lot of interest in recent years. This study offers a comprehensive overview of current retina-like imaging techniques and applications. First, we present the principle and implementation approaches, covering software and hardware, as well as comparisons. Then, we show how retina-like imaging can be used in a variety of applications, such as three-dimensional acquisition and reconstruction, target tracking, deep learning, and ghost imaging. Finally, the problems and prospects are highlighted in order to further research for practical application. The findings will help researchers better grasp retina-like imaging.
