Nutraceutical Treatment of Non-specific Anitis-Proctitis with the Local Application of a Flavonoid-Based Gel from Calabrian Bergamot | Chapter 08 | Issues and Developments in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 6

Anitis is an inflammation of the anal and perianal zones, while proctitis affects the rectum's lining. Despite the fact that both are common clinical disorders, they are difficult to characterise and are commonly overlooked in diagnostic and therapeutic terms. All inflammatory and infectious lesions would be classified as anitis/proctitis. In this diseased field, we believe nutraceuticals can find a right and unique location with outstanding clinical effects. In this paper, we discuss the activity of the components of Calabrian bergamot, as well as the usage of a gelatinous mixture including bergamot flavonoids and essential oil for the treatment of non-specific proctitis. A total of 178 patients (95 M-83 F) with an average age of 53 years (range 24-76 y) were treated with topical gel produced from bergamot from January 2019 to January 2020. At T1, 94 percent of patients experienced symptom alleviation, with 89 percent reporting continued well-being at T2. After treatment, the average satisfaction rate was 8.2. (range 6-10). At T2, the mean VAS pain score was 6 before therapy and 2 after treatment. Clinical evaluations using a Digital Videoproctoscope revealed a reduction in bleeding in 78.9% of cases and a reduction in relative hyperemia in 79.6% of cases. The findings of this study indicated that using local bergamot gel had an anti-inflammatory impact and accelerated the healing process.
