Low and High Molecular Weight Chitosan Analogues of Imidazole-2-Thiosemicarbazones and Their Copper(II) Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Antitumorigenic Activity in vitro | Chapter 12 | Challenges and Advances in Chemical Science Vol. 8

The goal of this research is to look at the effects of chitosan Mw and DDA on the antitumorigenic activity of chitosan thiosemicarbazones and their copper(II) complexes. It is expected that the antitumorigenic activity of chitosan thiosemicarbazones will be boosted by the synergistic effects of chitosan thiosemicarbazones, and that the complexes will have more strong antitumorigenic activity. The copper(II) complexes of chitosan oligosaccharide and high molecular weight crab shell chitosan were produced after they were functionalized as imidazole-2-carboxaldehyde chitosan thiosemicarbazones. FT-IR, 13C NMR, EPR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis, elemental analysis, and magnetic susceptibility studies were used to describe the produced compounds. The low molecular weight chitosan thiosemicarbazones have stronger in vitro inhibitory activity than the comparable high molecular weight chitosan derivative against the tumorigenic epithelial Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cell line, as measured by MTT assay. The improved inhibitory efficacy of copper(II) chitosan thiosemicarbazone chelates demonstrated the antitumorigenic increase following complex formation.
