Investigating the Awareness of Nutrition and Its Effects on Expectant Mothers in Selected Hospitals in the Greater Kumasi, Ghana | Chapter 04 | Innovations in Science and Technology Vol. 5

During delivery and breastfeeding, proper nutrition is critical for the mother's and foetus' health. However, there is a lack of information on nutrition awareness and its impacts among pregnant moms in Greater Kumasi, which is the study's goal. For the study, the researchers used a mixed techniques approach. Expectant moms who attended antenatal services at Tafo and Suntreso government hospitals between May and July 2014, as well as nurses at the same facilities, were the study's target group. The questionnaire was used to gather data from pregnant moms, while the interview guide was designed for nurses. The 50 pregnant mothers and five senior nurses from each of the hospitals who agreed to participate in the study were chosen using quota and convenience sampling approaches. The conclusions from the quantitative data were reported using frequencies and percentages. The data was analysed and the results were presented in dabbles and charts using the Statistical Package for Service Solutions (SPSS) Windows version 16.0 software. The study found that pregnant moms in Greater Kumasi had a moderate degree of dietary understanding. Thirty-five percent (35%) of the moms believed that nutritious meals were important for achieving good health and being strong enough to maintain the foetus. It was suggested that expecting moms' husbands, relatives, nurses, and other medical workers encourage them to consume a well-balanced diet.
