An Experimental Investigation of Jatropha Seed Oil as Austempering Quenchant for Ductile Cast Iron | Chapter 08 | Novel Perspectives of Engineering Research Vol. 6

The suitability of jatropha seed oil as a quenching medium for asaustempering ductile cast iron is investigated in this study. Vegetable oils cool faster than equivalent quenchants, making them ideal for heat treatment that requires austempering. Test samples were austenitized at 950°C, socked for 1 hour, and austempered for 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 hours, respectively. Apart from attaining an appreciable improvement in hardness, the result indicated a significant rise in tensile strength and impact energy. It also corresponds to the acceptable values for ductile cast iron austempered in a salt bath, meaning that jatropha oil can be utilised as a hot bath for ductile cast iron austempering.
