The goal of this brief review article is to reevaluate the definition and management of newborn anaemia, with an emphasis on anaemia of prematurity (AOP), and to propose a therapy protocol. Evidence-based neonatal transfusion guidelines are continuously being developed. When to provide packed red blood cells to a growing premature newborn with or without signs and symptoms of persistent neonatal anaemia is always a conundrum for a paediatrician and a neonatologist. It's even more challenging because co-morbidities including newborn infection, prematurity apnea, and caffeine therapy can explain some of the clinical picture. As a result, that doctor must consider the dangers and benefits of such a seemingly harmless surgery, as well as rule out illnesses that can resemble the signs and symptoms of preterm anaemia.
