Brief Review on Hairy Polyp of the Oropharynx: An Unusual Cause of Choking, Feeding Problems in a Newborn | Chapter 04 | New Horizons in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 10

Hairy polyp is a benign developmental anomaly that affects newborns and children. According to embryology, they are benign lesions having ectodermal and mesodermal origins. Depending on the size and location of the lesion, they might produce symptoms such as feeding difficulty, airway obstructions, and apneic episodes. We talk about a case of a hairy polyp in the Oro/Nasopharynx that produced feeding issues immediately after birth. Congenital hairy polyp/choristoma presentation, imaging investigations, management, and literature review were examined. Larger lesions can induce upper airway obstruction, respiratory discomfort, stridor, and feeding problems, and their clinical appearance will depend on their size and location. Surgical excision is used to treat the condition, and histological investigation confirms the diagnosis.
