An Overview of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in the Coffee Supply Chain | Chapter 07 | New Innovations in Economics, Business and Management Vol. 9

Coffee is a popular beverage across the world, as well as a significant source of cash for several countries. It is a hallucinogenic beverage and, after oil, the second most traded commodity. It is of major importance to the agri-food sector because of its economic and health implications, and it may be necessary to analyse the environmental repercussions related with its production and use. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method is widely accepted as a reliable quantitative technique for determining a product's or process's long-term viability. An overview of LCA applications in the coffee supply chain was undertaken as part of this project. The findings reveal that the studies are still restricted, focusing as much on the production phase as on production and consumption, and that the investigations are still limited. There is no agreement between functional units (FU), which varies based on the type of study and the type of country, and system boundaries, which take into account different phases of production and consumption. There is also no consistency in methodology and effect categories used, which vary depending on the technique employed, which is determined by the study's country of origin. The most important effect categories are those related to the environment, human health, and resources.
