A Review on Ventilator-associated Pneumonia: Clinical Challenges in Diagnosis | Chapter 05 | New Horizons in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 10

Ventilator-associated pneumonia is one of the most serious infection problems in critical care, with significant morbidity and high healthcare expenditures. Preventable hospital care complications are a significant source of wasted health-care expenses, with 7 in industrialised nations and 10 in developing countries acquiring Health Care-Associated Infections for every 100 hospitalised patients at any one moment. Despite decades of research, a precise diagnosis and preventative approach for ventilator-associated pneumonia remains elusive. This selected review focuses on key parts of the topic, such as evidence-based Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Diagnosis Strategies with Clinically Relevant Results. Clinical diagnosis has been chastised for its lack of precision and consistency. Quantitative cultures obtained by diverse methods appear to be diagnostically equivalent. The diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia should be made using an all-encompassing strategy Regardless of the criteria, a correct diagnosis of VAP involves clinical symptoms of infection, microbiological verification, and chest X-ray results, which might be difficult to interpret due to prior parenchymal damage.
