The National Power Grid is a critical component of the National Power System, containing critical infrastructures of national importance that the national economy could not function without, and its failure, whether complete or partial (black/brown-out), causes energy insecurity, a negative factor with devastating and catastrophic consequences for industrial, economic, and national security. Because the National Power Grid is of national strategic importance, security threats must be reviewed and monitored on a regular basis to detect weaknesses. Because Romania is connected to ENTSO-E (European Network of Transmission System Operators), which connects numerous electricity overhead lines from North to South, West to East, and even Africa and Asia, this study is also important from a European viewpoint. Knowing the vulnerabilities allows one to automatically detect the risks and threats to which it is exposed and engaged, allowing national/European actions or plans to be developed for the protection and security of critical infrastructures. As a result, it is thought that identifying vulnerabilities should become a pressing issue of national and European energy security, as well as a useful tool for authorities developing a short- and long-term energy strategy for the proper functioning of the National Power Grid and the national economy, because electricity is used in all sectors of the economy. To address the highlighted vulnerabilities, the authors suggest a National Energy Strategy 2021–2036 (short, medium, and long term), with the objective of enhancing energy and national security.
