Study on Reliability Design of Mechanical Systems Such as Compressor Subjected to Repetitive Stresses | Chapter 02 | Technological Innovation in Engineering Research Vol. 2

When constructing a reliable quantitative (RQ) specification, this study shows how parametric accelerated life testing (ALT) may be used to uncover design defects in mechanical devices. It consists of four components: (1) a system BX lifetime for which X of a product population fails, developed using the parametric ALT scheme, (2) fatigue and redesign, (3) adapted ALTs with design alternations, and (4) a determination of whether the system design(s) achieve the objective BX lifetime. As a consequence, a life-stress model is provided, as well as a sample size formulation. A mass/energy balance on the vapor-compression cycle was explored to assess the compressor's pressure loading and perform parametric ALT. The compressor failed during the first ALT owing to a damaged or fractured suction reed valve constructed of Sandvik 20C. Steel made of carbon (1 wt percent C, 0.25 wt percent Si, 0.45 wt percent Mn). Due to an overlap between the suction reed valve and the valve plate, as well as frequent pressure loading, the suction reed valves were tired. To fix the problem, the valve plate's trespan dimensions, tumble process, ball peening, and brushing processes were employed. Due to interference between the crankshaft and thrust washer, the compressor locked at the second ALT. The heat treatment on the outside of the cast iron crankshaft was indicated in the corrective action plan (0.45 wt percent C, 0.25 wt percent Si, 0.8 wt percent Mn, 0.03 wt percent P). Following these design adjustments, there were no difficulties during the third ALT.
