Expectations for the Future Life of Migrants in Beijing, China: A Cross-sectional Study| Chapter 5 | Research Developments in Arts and Social Studies Vol. 3

The purpose of this study is to add to the theorization of migrants' expectations for the future life (EFL) who do not have a household registration (hukou) in Beijing, China. Although the EFL of many rural-urban migrants is well established, the EFL of other migrants, such as educated individuals, and the mechanism by which EFL is formed are far less well understood. We suggest that EFL is a person's prediction or evaluation of future living circumstances based on his or her current impression of human well-being or utility of life, with the major issue being whether he or she intends to live in the city in the future. Using data from in-depth interviews with 30 Beijing in-migrants, three types of EFL for migrants are defined based on the social production functions (SPF) hypothesis. The EFL of migrants is determined by comparing their present real utility of life with the "normative utility" in the relevant life course stage, which is the life utility that society expects individuals to have in their unique life course stage. Finally, by applying further 9 copies of interviewee transcripts, it is confirmed that the theoretical saturation has been attained.
