Prevent Suicide in Jails and Prisons: Avoid Lawsuits| Chapter 2 | Research Developments in Arts and Social Studies Vol. 3

Suicide is a common occurrence among inmates in jails and prisons. Medical malpractice lawsuits and 1983-based purposeful disregard by penitentiary personnel are common. The majority of suicides are caused by a combination of fixed and dynamic elements and events, as well as their interplay. A systematic suicide screening employing a well-designed suicide screening questionnaire that covers recognised risk variables can identify the majority of inmates at risk if done correctly. Inmates are identified and their mental health is assessed, setting the foundation for preventive intervention, monitoring, and treatment. A multifaceted suicide prevention programme like the one described in this chapter saves lives while simultaneously providing the best defence against liability litigation. Suicide prevention can be aided by proper medication treatment of mentally ill suicidal prisoners.
