The natural period of oscillation is directly related to another of a system's most essential intrinsic temporal and frequency characteristics: delay. Despite the fact that this link has been well recognised since the middle of the past century and is employed in practise by control engineers, it is noteworthy that it has gotten little attention in academia.
The purpose of this
paper is to investigate the interaction between these two parameters, their
association with the controlled system's temporal response, and their impact on
the controllers' calibration rules.
Also presented is a
proof of the relationship between delay and natural period of oscillation,
based on the behaviour of first-order systems with pure delay and the use of
basic linear control tools such as root locus and polynomial algebra.
