Prevalence of Bacterial Vaginosis and Associated Factors among Non Pregnant Women: A Recent Study | Chapter 8 | Highlights on Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 11

Bacterial vaginosis is a common cause of vaginal infection and irregular vaginal discharge in sexually active women. The study took place in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vinayaka Missions Medical College and Hospital in Karaikal, Puducherry, from January to December 2018. The main goal of this research is to find out how common bacterial vaginosis is and what factors are linked to it. All patients with vaginal discharge who presented to the gynaecology OPD were screened for bacterial vaginosis. The characteristics of women with and without bacterial vaginosis are contrasted. In the gynaecological OPD, 5130 patients were seen. 1534 women reported vaginal discharge, and 422 of them tested positive for bacterial vaginosis according to Amsel's criteria. There were 1112 women who did not have. The average prevalence of bacterial vaginosis was 27.5 percent among symptomatic patients with abnormal vaginal discharge. Bacterial vaginosis is more common in illiterate women in their 30s and 40s who work as farmers. Contraceptive users on anatomical sites (IUCD and Barrier method) were more likely than those who did not to contract bacterial vaginosis.
