A Retrospective Study on Ovarian Tumours in a Tertiary Care Hospital | Chapter 7 | Highlights on Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 11

Ovarian masses are a common gynaecological problem. The majority are non-neoplasic or functional cysts, with the remainder being benign or malignant neoplastic cysts. This is a retrospective study conducted in 2017 at Vinayaka Missions Medical College and Hospital, Karaikal, Union Territory of Puducherry, in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. All patients diagnosed with ovarian masses who visited the gynaecology OPD were included in the study. Ovarian masses were found in 297 of the 8564 patients who visited the Gynecological OPD, with 96 of them requiring surgery. According to the histopathology survey, 83.3 percent of the women with neoplastic tumours were benign, while 16.7% were malignant. In 38 percent of patients who were operated on, CA 125 levels were elevated (>35 U/mL). CA-125 levels in healthy Neoplastic lesions average 17 U/mL, while CA-125 levels in malignant Neoplastic lesions average 112 U/mL. The most common cancer was Serous Cyst adenocarcinoma (81.8%), followed by Mucinous Cyst adenocarcinoma (81.8%). (18 percent ). Women with infertility or on infertility medications are more likely to have functional ovarian masses. Ovarian cysts are common in the first trimester of pregnancy, as well as in the postnatal and postabortal phase.
