Clinical Applications of the Areas under ESPVR: A Review | Chapter 2 | Highlights on Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 10

For a linear model of the ESPVR, relationships between the ejection fraction (EF), parameters characterising the end-systolic pressure-volume relation (ESPVR), and regions under the ESPVR are determined. In the mathematical formalism characterising the ESPVR, the active pressure created by the myocardium during an ejecting contraction (also known as isovolumic pressure Piso by physiologists) is incorporated. The ESPVR's numerous sections are sensitive indices that represent the condition of the myocardium. The mathematical formalism's consistency is demonstrated through applications to clinical data reported in the medical literature. The results show that bivariate (or multivariate) data analysis is superior to utilising a single measure (such as EF) to differentiate between clinical groups. Calculations can be performed on data acquired in a non-invasive manner when pressure ratios are used (ratio of pressures can be calculated by using the mathematical formalism introduced).
