Diffusional Approach on Electrospun PLLA Membranes for Caffeine Delivery | Chapter 6 | Advanced Aspects of Engineering Research Vol. 6

The vast tridimensional area created by electrospun fibres, capable of storing any type of substance, is one of its greatest advantages. Given their enormous surface area and ability to transport a bioactive molecule, the electrospinning technology to manufacture polymer membranes for drug delivery applications is the focus of our research. The mechanism that governs the releasing process was further investigated using mathematical modelling of the delivery system kinetics. Electrospinning produced regular and smooth membranes that were suited for drug delivery methods, according to the findings. The choice of a suitable solvent for this process was a critical factor to consider, since it determined whether fibres could form and influenced fibre porosity. The mathematical modelling also revealed that thicker PLLA membranes exhibited a Fickian diffusion tendency during drug transport, indicating that drug delivery mechanisms might be better controlled.
