Since its discovery in Chennai in 1986, HIV has been a threat to India. According to the current situation, an estimated 2.1 million people in India would be infected with HIV by the year 2015. The horrible sickness, which was first diagnosed in the country in 1986, gradually grew in incidence until it peaked in the years 2000-2001, when the prevalence reached 0.38 percent. Since 2002, the prevalence has been steadily declining, reaching a low of 0.26 percent in 2015. According to the prevalence, India's various states are classified as high, moderate, or low. The disease was initially limited to the FSW and its clients, but it eventually spread to the broader public via the bridge populace. As the epidemic has progressed, women have become a larger proportion of those living with HIV infection, particularly in rural regions. The National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) was established in 1992 and is currently in its fourth phase.
