The Rotational-Translational Spectra of N2 and CO2 and their Mixtures with Argon: Experimental Investigation | Chapter 10 | Research Trends and Challenges in Physical Science Vol. 6

As a result of molecular pair collisions, the rotational-translational absorption spectra of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and their mixes with argon in the wavelength range 20-190 cm-1 are acquired and analysed. The terahertz spectra of N2 and CO2 are shown to be dominated by quadrupole interactions, as opposed to absorption in noble gas combinations. The integrated intensity of the recorded spectra was used to determine the quadrupole moments of the N2 and CO2 molecules, which were found to be 1.5-1.7 10-26 CGSE and 4.25 10-26 CGS, respectively. The Kihara potential was used as the interaction potential instead of the Lennard-Jones potential to correct the calculation of the value of the quadrupole moments of CO2 from the intensity of the rotational-translational spectrum of pure CO2, which more accurately conveys the peculiarities of the interaction of molecules like CO2. The computed quadrupole moments from the spectra of N2 CO2 and their mixes with argon accord well with those obtained by other methods. The findings suggest that studying the rotational-translational spectra of simple molecules could lead to the discovery of their molecular constants.
