Determination of Breast Cancer in Women Under 40 Years Old at Yalgado Ouédraogo University Hospital, Burkina Faso | Chapter 04 | Recent Developments in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 16

Introduction: Breast cancer management in Burkina Faso is still difficult due to late diagnosis. The therapy options are restricted, and complications are common, resulting in a dismal prognosis. The purpose of this study was to characterise the current clinical condition of breast cancer in women under the age of 40 at Yalgado Ouedraogo University Hospital in Yalgado (Burkina Faso).

The goal of this study was to characterise the current clinical condition of breast cancer in Burkina Faso women under the age of 40.

Materials and Methods: From August 1st, 2014, to February 29th, 2016, Yalgado Ouedraogo CHU conducted a prospective cohort analysis of 58 cases of breast cancer verified by histology.

The average age of the patients was 34.8 years (plus or minus 4 years). In 22.4 percent of cases, there was a history of breast cancer. In 94.8 percent of cases, invasive ductal carcinoma was discovered. T3 and T4 tumours made up 20.7 percent and 38.0 percent of the total, respectively. In 34.5 percent of cases, locally advanced carcinomas were discovered. Fifty-three women underwent complete mastectomy, and 34.5 percent of the resection margins were infiltrated. Lymphocytic infiltration and vascular emboli were seen in 86.2 percent and 51.7 percent of the cases, respectively. 38 cases were classified as grade III by the Scarff-Bloom-Richardson system. Hormone receptors were found to be negative in 27 of the 45 instances. Chemotherapy and radiation were used in 98.3 percent and 48.3 percent of patients, respectively. The patients' average survival time was 22.7 2.8 months.

Conclusion: Despite treatment, the prognosis for young women in Burkina Faso with breast cancer remains dismal. The promotion of early screening with genetic counselling, the construction of an effective technical platform, and the formation of a national subsidy for therapeutic care are all difficulties that must be addressed.
