Assessing Nurses Journey of Postoperative Pediatric Pain Care Using Participation Observation in Indonesia: A Qualitative Study | Chapter 11 | Challenges in Disease and Health Research Vol. 2

Children continue to experience significant levels of pain during hospitalization despite proliferation of
pain research, advances in pain management knowledge and treatments, and improved methods to
relieve pain. Effective pain management remains an elusive goal in Indonesia. Many children in
Indonesia endure pain from surgery, illness, trauma, nursing interventions and other medical
procedures during hospitalization. Unrelieved post-operative pain in children continues to be a major
clinical problem, despite advances in pain management in Indonesia. Nurses spend more time with
hospitalized children than any other health care providers and they play a vital role in the assessment
and management of the children’s pain. Good pain management practice greatly influences the
quality of care given to affected hospitalized children and their families. The significance of the study
is to address the gap in nurses’ knowledge of pain management may be having. This study seeks to
explore nurses post-operative pain care in an Indonesian Hospital.
