Study on Apple Storage in Ultra-Low Oxygen Cold Store | Chapter 06 | Current Topics in Agricultural Sciences Vol. 5

The current research focuses on the problem of apple storage and the necessity for improvements in our culture. We can store apples in a variety of ways, but storage in an ultra-low oxygen (ULO) cold store has demonstrated a large improvement in the holding shelf life of apple cultivars. Apple storage in controlled atmosphere cold stores with lower oxygen concentrations (1.0-1.3 percent, in some cases less than 1%) is referred to as apple storage in ultra-low oxygen cold stores. An airtight gas cold room with a lower rate of oxygen and a higher amount of CO2 is known as an ultra-low oxygen store room. It has been discovered and documented that storing apple varieties (Royal Gala, Red Delicious, Idared, Jonagold, and Golden Delicious) in ultra-low oxygen cold storage extends their storage life from 3 to 6 months in conventional cold storage to 7-11 months while preserving their nutritional, sensorial, and biological parameters and characteristics after harvest. In Afghanistan, most basic and cold storerooms are used for apple storage, but they are insufficient, and with local methods and facilities, ultra-low oxygen cold storage can help farmers, customers, and the country's economic growth.
