Examining the demographic, clinical, and prognostic aspects of maternal mortality in Yaoundé was the aim of this study. Utilizing retrospective data, we conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study to gather maternal mortality as defined by the WHO. from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2019, in two tertiary facilities in Yaounde: the Yaounde Central Hospital and the Yaounde Gyneco-Obstetric and Paediatric Hospital (YGOPH) (YCH).
208 maternal fatalities were recorded over the research period, with referral
cases accounting for 4/5 (78.5%) of these deaths. At YCH and YGOPH, the MM
ratio was respectively 1532.8 and 609.5 per 100,000 live births (LB).
Haemorrhage (49%) and hypertensive illnesses and their consequences (21.2%)
were the main causes, and maternal mortality was linked to 50% of instances of
foetal or neonatal fatalities (57.4% in YCH vs. 28.3% in YGOPH, P 0.001).
Systems for health care were connected to MM.
The maternal mortality ratios in YCH and YGOPH maternity units have sharply
increased since 2017. The most frequent MM causes were hypertensive conditions
and haemorrhage. These elements can be prevented. Our health systems must be
improved if we want to significantly reduce the number of maternal deaths.
