Natural and Synthetic Chalcones as Privileged Molecules with Antioxidant Activities | Book Publisher International

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) in higher concentrations damage cells and deform molecules of a protein, lipid, or macromolecular nature. Maintaining cell homeostasis is intimately tied to maintaining a balance between ROS formation and elimination. Antioxidants are chemicals that can neutralise ROS's harmful effects. These substances are both artificial and organic. Flavonoids are a class of substances with strong antioxidant potential. Chalcones stand out among them due to their many biological characteristics, many of which are reliant on their antioxidant potential. The two aromatic subunits (aldehyde and acetofenone)' substituents (hydroxy and methoxy groups being necessary) have an impact on the type and position of this characteristic. Hybrid compounds with improved antioxidant capabilities can also be created by substituting an aromatic component with a heterocycle (such as isoxazole).
