Morphometric Study of the Black-Lip Pearl Oyster, Pinctada margaritifera from North Sulawesi Waters, Indonesia | Chapter 10 | Research Aspects in Biological Science Vol. 4

With a 1,837-kilometer coastline and 314,983 km2 of marine waters, North Sulawesi province has a rich marine environment. One of the aquatic biotas there is the black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, known locally as "Bia Kapi-Kapi," but data on this population is still lacking. The need for pearl oyster aquaculture is still met by natural captures, but the population is in danger of going extinct due to rising exploitation. Morphometric analyses can be used to calculate an organism's potential and manage resources, both of which are crucial for an organism's survival in its environment.

The goal of this study is to examine the morphometrics of P. margaritifera from the waters around North Sulawesi. Shell length (SL), shell width (SW), and shell thickness (ST) were the biometric characteristics evaluated using digital vernier callipers, while total weight (TW), wet meat weight (WMW), and shell weight (Sw) were measured using digital scales from Ohaus. This study provides quantitative data that may be utilised to evaluate the pearl oyster stocks that are present in the waters off of North Sulawesi. The size of P. margaritifera was dominated by medium-sized shells, with an average length of 8.72 cm and a range of 8 to 11 cm in length (43.52 percent). According to this document, the oysters are still developing. The biometric relationship of P. margaritifera from North Sulawesi seas showed a very significant association when all shell dimensions were taken into account. This result exhibits a negative allometric growth.
