Background: Incisional hernias in pregnancy are infrequent and often treated with conservative measures. Although there isn't a single best way to address incisional hernias in pregnant women, it is clear that each case needs to be handled differently.
Studying the treatment of a term pregnancy with an incisional hernia is the
goal.
We describe an incisional hernia in a third gravida who was 30 years old and in
term with two prior vaginal births and an underlying hyperpigmented loose skin
area. Incisional hernia was caused by an open appendectomy performed 10 years
earlier that had been complicated 22 days after the procedure and necessitated
an emergency laparotomy due to intestinal blockage. During the Caesarean
procedure, the incisional hernia was fixed with nonabsorbable sutures.
Incisional hernias during pregnancy are quite uncommon. The majority of
management is cautious and individualised. It is safe and often desired to do
the hernia repair and caesarean section simultaneously.
