Disability in Yorogo-Yipala Community: A Matter of Perception | Chapter 9 | Emerging Trends in Disease and Health Research Vol.4.

Because of misinformation and some dominant socio-cultural ideas, as well as economic concerns, disability is sometimes viewed unfavourably. People with disabilities (PWDs) face a wide range of issues, including violations of human rights, poverty, stigma, discrimination, and marginalisation. Disability is linked to poverty, and it also creates barriers to education, employment, public services, and social protection. In the majority of cases, disability has been addressed by philanthropic efforts that have failed to recognise the rights and involvement of people with disabilities, who are citizens just like everyone else. The study's goals included determining the causes of physical disability as well as rural residents' attitudes toward people with disabilities. The research used a mixed method approach, which included both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Data was gathered through focus groups, semi-structured interviews, and observation. The respondents also had positive attitudes toward disability. This is encouraging, however favourable attitudes do not appear to have changed as a result of the positive views. The majority of participants appear to have favourable attitudes toward disability, which may help to minimise stigma and discrimination against persons who have physical disabilities (PWPDs). This indicates that stigma and prejudice towards disabled people were not common among the respondents. As a result, this study suggests that organisations such as the Bolgatanga municipality's department of social welfare be better equipped logistically to enhance their efforts in educating rural populations about handicap issues.
