Tocopherols: Structure, Distribution, Biosynthesis, Genetics and Breeding Aspects in Plants| Chapter 5 | New Innovations in Chemistry and Biochemistry Vol.8

Vitamin E was made up of tocopherol derivatives in four different forms: (alpha), (beta), (gamma), and (gamma) (\delta\). In photosynthetic tissues, (alpha)-tocopherol predominates, whereas (gamma)-tocopherol predominates in seeds. The overall tocopherol concentration, as well as the kinds, composition, and distribution of tocopherols, varies between plant tissues and developmental stages. Tocopherols were formerly thought to be only found in plastids, however their existence has lately been discovered in seed lipid structures, vacuoles, and nuclei of mesophyll cells. The shikimate and methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) routes are involved in tocopherol production; however, under limited conditions, the MEP pathway may be shifted to the phytol recycling pathway during chlorophyll degradation. Scavenging free radicals, maintaining membrane integrity and stability, physiological modulation of enzyme activity, cellular/retrograde signalling, and gene expression are all roles of tocopherols in plant cells. Trait variability is a requirement for breeding. Molecular and genetic bases for variation in tocopherol concentration and composition have been discovered in several research. The characterisation of found QTLs in various oilseed crops may make it easier to use high (alpha)-tocopherol alleles from wild variety in various breeding programmes for the creation of high tocopherol genotypes, which could lead to improved edible oil quality in various oilseed crops. With all of these considerations in mind, the following objectives were set for the study: 1. Tocopherols in plants: structural and distributional characteristics 2. Tocopherol biosynthesis, genetics, and functions 3. Oilseed breeding for tocopherols.
