The Educational Repercussions of the “G.I. Bill” in American Society | Chapter 6 | Research Developments in Arts and Social Studies Vol.2

The end of WWII posed a severe rehabilitation challenge, not only for the country, but also for the large number of veterans who returned home after the armed conflict. And, in order to avoid the turmoil and social strain that followed World War I, US administrations led by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman were tasked with devising a precise strategy for veterans' rehabilitation and reintegration into civilian life.

The "G.I. Bill," also known as the "Servicemen's Readjustment Act," is a United States statute that was passed in June 1944 and became Public Law 346 with the goal of benefitting American servicemen who were still serving in World War II at the time.

The ultimate goal of this law was to equip demobilised troops with a legal framework that would allow them to obtain funding for professional or university education as well as a one-year pension to assist them with their livelihood. This rule also allowed soldiers to obtain loans to purchase a property or even establish their own business.

The benefits that this act provided, in particular, to this group of veteran soldiers in the field of education, as well as the impact that it had on the expansion of university or professional studies, particularly after the return home of Second World War veterans, will be the focus of this article.

As a result, our goal will be to examine the effects of the G.I. Bill on the educational backgrounds of American veterans following World War II. Despite the fact that there appears to be no final agreement on the effects of this law on soldiers and American society in general, it has been recognised in a number of fields that the passage of this law enabled a large number of veterans to obtain higher education that would have been nearly impossible otherwise.
