While domestic workers in Dar es Salaam are largely young girls from communities outside the city, little is known about how the females, who are still young and have limited experience, manage to get to the city. Their understanding of how they are tied to city employers is also lacking. One of the main goals of the research on which this article is based was to look into the methods used by young girls to get to the city and connect with employers, as well as to investigate the type of employers. This report reveals help from parents, relatives, drivers, conductors, and brokers as essential mechanisms of travelling to the city, based on migration network theory and aligned with study findings. It also identifies informal job agencies and brokers as important conduits for connecting young women with various companies. The author suggests taking immediate action to stop the use of social media as a tool for human trafficking and the hiring of young girls as domestic workers, both of which violate their rights.
