Does Artisanal Tin Mining Affect Academic Performance of Secondary School Students?: A Case Study from Barakin Ladi Community in Plateau State, Nigeria| Chapter 1 | Research Developments in Arts and Social Studies Vol.2

The study compared the academic achievement of secondary school kids in the mining settlement of Barakin-Ladi versus Mangu, a non-mining community in Plateau State, Nigeria. The study's major purpose was to investigate the variations in students' performance in secondary school terminal exams like as WAEC/NECO and tertiary entrance exams such as JAMB/UTME in Barakin-Ladi and Mangu. To achieve these objectives, data was gathered from 732 respondents in the two LGAs. The sample size was calculated using the Taro Yamane method. The respondents, all of whom were secondary school students, were recruited from each of the two LGAs using a basic random selection approach. The data for the study was gathered from both primary and secondary sources. Quantitative methods were used to analyse the data (basic percentage and chi-square). When compared to Mangu, where high academic achievement was documented in WAEC/JAMB exams, the data showed a link between social risks such child labour and mining-related conflicts and low student performance in Barakin-Ladi. A comparison of past WEAC and JAMB results from the two research locations backed up these observations. The paper mentions community-wide education for pupils on the dangers of artisanal Tin mining, as well as the enforcement of artisanal Tin mining regulations in Barakin-Ladi.
