Real-time collaboration of various digital models is important for the success of building projects employing Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) or Building Information Modeling (BIM). Users can work together in a multidisciplinary team to co-author various smart digital models in real time for greater efficiency. A physical server (Local Area Network/LAN server) or a cloud-based server (Wide Area Network/WAN server) can be used to do this. Cloud-based servers include A360, C4R, Collaboration for Revit, and BIM360Design collaboration. However, the aforementioned cloud services are relatively expensive, making real-time collaboration with BIM/VDC models challenging for academia and small firms. As part of the Construction Science and Management Department's Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) course, this case study attempted to find a cost-effective alternative to the present cloud-based server (CSM). This study used a well-known and free cloud server (Google) as a WAN server to host four multidisciplinary collaborative VDC central models for five users spread across five different geographic locations and time zones. The research yielded promising results in terms of creating a real-time collaborative workshare environment. As a result, this research has the potential to assist both academia and small businesses. Furthermore, this study found that a course can be developed to imitate the digital work environment of a small AEC firm, giving students valuable job experience.
