In the treatment of colonic disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, Chron's disease, chronic pancreatitis, and colonic carcinomas, oral medicine delivery to the colon becomes critical. The duration spent in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), GI environment, microbial flora, and enzymatic degradation, among other biological variables impacting oral drug administration, are all blocking drug delivery. One of the most useful strategies for delivering medications to the colon via the oral route is the prodrug strategy. Due to the selective breaking of the azo link by azoreductases discharged by the gut microbiota, azo prodrugs of 5-Amino Salicylic Acid (5-ASA), 4-ASA, anticancer drugs, and novel leads useful in colonic illnesses have been examined in this work for colon directed drug delivery.
