Pathogens Causing Bacteraemia in Tertiary Care Hospital in India: Microbiological Diagnosis and Antimicrobial Sensitivity Pattern| Chapter 2 |Innovations in Microbiology and Biotechnology Vol.4

The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of bacteria that cause bacteremia as well as antibiotic sensitivity patterns in a tertiary care setting in order to assist doctors in initiating empiric antibiotic therapy and formulating antibiotic policies. During March 2012 to February 2013, a hospital-based prospective cross-sectional study was undertaken at SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Potheri, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu, India. Most developing nations, including India, underreport the prevalence of bacteremia, the common causative organisms causing this infection and their antibiotic resistance pattern, as well as morbidity and death in rural populations. According to the study, bacteremia was found in 14.90 percent of 765 individuals of all ages. Such research will contribute in the development of management guidelines and antibiotic policies to improve the outcomes of bacteremia patients.
