A Cross-Sectional Study on Media Parenting in Rural Part of India and Its Impact on Children | Chapter 16 | Highlights on Medicine and Medical Science Vol. 14

Background: Media and gadgets are increasingly being used by adults and children in both urban and rural areas. Excessive use is a cause for concern because of the numerous negative consequences.

Objectives: To determine: I the frequency, duration, and types of media screen exposure that children receive, as well as the reasons for their use of media; ii) parental understanding, attitude, and capacity to serve as a media mentor for their children; and iii) the influence of media consumption on school achievement. According to the survey, two-thirds of children chose their own media content, although having no definite awareness of the content's health or appropriateness.

The study was conducted in a qualitative cross-sectional format.

Participants: 200 youngsters aged 18 who were accompanied by their parents to the hospital for OPD services.

A pre-designed questionnaire was used to collect data.

The average age of child media exposure was discovered to be 6.43.8 years. On school days, youngsters used the media for 1.9 hours compared to 2.7 hours on vacation. The most popular media formats were cartoons and mobile games, with television and mobile being the most popular. In > 5 year old children, poor school performance was linked to media use of 2 hours during school days [HR =1.38 (95CI= 1.01-1.89), p=0.04]. Many parents were aware of a few negative effects of media, but were unable to control them due to a lack of information and awareness.

Conclusion: Not only in cities, but also in rural regions, proper media parenting is an unmet need. Using the media during the school day should be avoided. Parental media education with the cooperation of a paediatrician, a school teacher, a psychologist, and policymakers will be required.
