The Current Situation and Influencing Factors of Depression in the Elderly: A Case Study of Guangdong Province | Chapter 11 | Current Innovations in Disease and Health Research Vol. 2

Elderly concavity has been acknowledged as a major global community health issue. If elderly cavity patients do not receive up-to-date and effective situation, it will increase their risk of suffering from physiological and cognitive diseases, not only causing serious financial burden to families, but also growing the burden of disease on organization. The aim of this study is to survey the status of despair in the elderly and resolve its main influencing determinants. Totally 1508 elderly crowd (776 males and 734 females) from 5 capitals in Guangdong Province are selected by layered random sampling. They are surveyed accompanying the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), Mini mental State Examination (MMSE), and a self-rewrote questionnaire of common personal and living conditions of the old. The survey results indicate the following 2 points. First, the total score of GDS is (10.20 ± 6.37), the total score of SSRS and objective support, emotional support, and the utilization of social support are (30.79 ± 5.51), (9.24 ± 2.37), (19.38 ± 4.95), and (9.22 ± 2.15), individually. Second, the results of multiple binomial logistic reversion analysis show that the following 7 determinants (OR=1.067~20.224, P=0.000~0.045) are risk factors for elderly despair, like economically developed or undeveloped regions, woman, extreme education, widowed or widowed, poor health rank, monthly premium of 1001-2500 yuan, and insufficient friendly support level, while other 6  items (OR=0.035-0.849, P=0.000-0.041) are securing factors for old depression, such as economically progressive regions, bearing children, endure spouses or children, pension of in addition to 2500 yuan, satisfactory friendly support, and engaging in occupations apart from civil helpers before retirement. It is therefore submitted that depression is a coarse mental disorder in the aging, and social support, personal financial status, and history adaptability may be doing factors for cavity in the elderly.
