A Clinical Study of Cauterization of Sphenopalatine Artery for Idiopathic Refractory Posterior Epistaxis | Chapter 1 | Research Highlights in Disease and Health Research Vol. 1

Refractory posterior epistaxis makes necessary sphenopalatine artery cautery. The current study proposed to estimate the efficiency of cautery the sphenoid channel and to observe medical checkup complications. This prospective dispassionate study of 200 consecutive adult cases with posterior epistaxis was administered in a private specialized emergency room and clinic in Kirkuk, northerly Iraq, from the period from February 2019 to September 2021. The nasal crater of each participant was painstakingly examined endoscopically to find out the part of the bleeding, and therefore determine the need of surgical intervention. A total of 200 epistaxis cases were contained, with posterior epistaxis giving reason for 12 (6%) of all epistaxis cases requiring sphenoid channel cauterization. According to the findings, the success rate of all surgical cases was 100%, as no weighty complications were noticed during or later endoscopic cauterization, with the exception of individual case of numbness of the tendency, which evenly disappeared all the while the first three months after the procedure. As a result, we decided that cautery of the sphenopalatine artery produces better results and bear be considered first-line situation for idiopathic posterior epistaxis.
