Evaluating the Change in Skills Observed with a Novel Brushing Technique Based on Sequence Learning Using Video Bio-Feedback System in Children | Chapter 5 | Highlights on Medicine and Medical Science Vol. 14

Background: A simple but effective fones or horizontal scrub method has often been advocated and used among young toddlers. For young infants and others who lack the necessary muscle development for more advanced techniques, the Fones technique is recommended. We've seen that kids who use this technique focus more on the front buccal surfaces of their teeth and ignore the interior surfaces. To solve this issue, a change in methodology is required.

The study's goal is to explain a brushing technique based on the sequence learning principle, as well as to assess changes in skills after teaching and practising the technique via a video bio-feedback system.

Methods: The procedure of brushing, from the dispensing of the paste on the brush to the end of brushing, was video recorded in a standardised manner for each kid by an expert before and after the training of the new brushing method for 12 weeks. The skills of data brushing were collected and quantitatively assessed.

Results: In both the maxillary and mandibular arch, the overall change in learning skills observed with the new brushing method as compared to the innate method revealed statistically significant improvement with the new brushing method (p0.001).

Conclusion: Tooth brushing should be taught to youngsters as a habit and an important part of their daily hygiene regimen. Brushing technique based on the sequence learning principle can be recommended as a novel brushing approach for children.
