Prayer Chanting of Two Jewish-Sephardi Traditions- Music, History and Culture | Chapter 03 | Current Research in Language, Literature and Education Vol. 6

This article examines a Jewish liturgical genre that is performed during the main portions of Jewish prayer sessions. The liturgical title for this liturgical genre is "prayer chanting." The expression refers to the cantor's musical rendition of the prose readings at Jewish prayer sessions. A prayer chanting genre exists in most Jewish liturgical traditions, and it is distinguished by a strong relationship between the musical structure and the text's structure. The goal of this essay is to examine the musical, cultural, and historical characteristics of prayer chanting in two Sephardi Jewish traditions, as well as to explain how this liturgical genre reflects historical and cultural characteristics of these liturgical traditions. The information presented here is based on field research that included prayer recordings and interviews. Interviews with well-known cantors from both liturgical traditions, as well as observations at both liturgical traditions' synagogues This kind of Moroccan Jewish liturgical music will be the subject of future research, which is crucial for the field of Jewish music.
