Thermoplastic IUDs were the first type of modern IUDs, followed by copper- and subsequently progestin-based models. Many various sizes and types of IUDs were first produced because there were no established rules. There are now relatively few advancements in IUD research because of the severe rules. Because of this, it is doubtful that contemporary practitioners have my level of experience. This article, based on the experience of one researcher over a 50-year period, explains the advancements in IUD research from the inert plastic devices through the copper-bearing devices to the present progestin-containing IUDs. Numerous articles on a large portion of this event have been published in peer-reviewed journals. The usage of 15 distinct IUD types and its subtypes, totaling 30 different sizes, is documented in the article.
