The Experiences of Cancer Patients Undergoing Treatment at Oshakati Oncology Clinic, Oshana Region, Namibia | Chapter 6 | An Overview of Disease and Health Research Vol. 1

Cancer is one of the global health problems. People living with different types of cancer experienced some challenges which prevent them from living a normal life. The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the experiences of cancer patients receiving treatment at the Oshakati Oncology Clinic in Namibia. This study employed a qualitative exploratory research design to understand the experiences of these patients. A purposive sampling method was used to select the participants. A total of twelve patients diagnosed with different types of cancer were interviewed using an unstructured individual in-depth interview. Data were transcribed verbatim, and Tesch`s method was used to analyse the data.

The study revealed multifaceted challenges which include physical constraints such as physical ailments, long distances to health facilities and excessive travelling. Cancer patients also faced financial and resource constraints. Even family members of cancer patients are financially affected, as children are less likely to stay in school due to financial constraints. They also experienced other challenges such as negative attitudes of health workers, poor communication and inadequate provision of information to patients. The study concluded that understanding these challenges can assist the government, private sectors, non- governmental organisations and health workers to come up with intervention strategies to support cancer patients effectively. The study recommends the need to decentralise oncology services and to provide in-service training to the health workers working with patients living with cancer.

Literary Genres in the Digital Age | Chapter 1 | Digital Crossroads: Integrating Humanities, Science and Technology Edition 1

Language is significant for education, cognitive development, creative expression and social interaction. Any language which caters to a large section of people is the preferred one. English serves the purpose.  English is the global language and window into the world etc. Therefore, the acquisition of the English language as L2 (Second Language) should begin at the primary level. Literature is used as the medium to teach language. There are different literary genres such as poetry, drama, essays, novels, fables, autobiographies etc. in the English language which are adopted to enhance language skills. In this digital age, it is easy to introduce these genres to the students. For example, dramas and novels can be shown on the screen and the learners may be asked to enact the same or to write the reviews which give direct experience to the students. There is a wide scope to improve vocabulary, pronunciation, usage, and fluency by using these literary genres with the help of gadgets like computers, LCD projectors, laptops, iPods, Kindles etc.  The exposure to these gadgets and technologies would create interest among the learners and get hands-on experience. This would result in enhancing language proficiency. Thus, the study of ‘Literary Genres in the Digital Age’ has significance in language acquisition. The action research is carried out to find out the relevance of literary genres in the digital age in English language teaching-learning. The research is carried out by observation and informal interviews.

Could Artificial Neurons Create a Neural Plasticity of Their Own? | Chapter 8 | Advanced Research in Biological Science Vol. 2

This stage explores the tenants of organic neurons and their plasticity. It before proceeds with an study of artificial neurons and the potential for pretended neural plasticity. Artificial affecting animate nerve organs plasticity is before placed within the circumstances of strategic thinking. A conceptual foundation is then tried. Neural plasticity is the brain’s ability to restructure allure performance and function along organic, chemical, and material lines. It is the source of structural changes in intelligence functions and performance. It could be working but it could also be fundamental. The process is driven by three forces: learning, knowledge and memory or on account of trauma. It is created all the while different chapters of an individuals’ life opportunity. Early childhood designs a core and subsequent growth phases enhance and complement this gist. Current work on machine intelligence attempts, more frequently than not, to simulate human intelligence process. Those include affecting animate nerve organs plasticity. And the question could stand: could an affected neurons system or group of systems expand their own neural plasticity?  And by what method and for what purpose? The item could provide a progress in the question whether AI commit progress to the so called “self-awareness” development. Self-awareness adopts a measure of neural plasticity, a fundamental measure of a fully developed AI.

Routine Assessment of Health Related Quality of Life in Head & Neck Cancer Patients: A 10 Years’ Experience | Chapter 16 | Current Practice in Medical Science Vol. 1

In the field of head and neck oncology, clinical outcomes are often employed. Clinician-reported outcome assessments (health professionals), observer-reported outcome assessments (caregivers), and patient-reported outcome assessments are the three categories that clinical outcome evaluations fall under (patient or proxies).

Based on a decade of experience, we identified the following crucial elements for a successful implementation: institutional support and approval, inclusion of all first-line caregivers, uniformity of team objectives and institutional proposals, team formation and training, encouragement of the defined workflow in routine clinical practise, and ongoing monitoring and analysis.

The knowledge gained from routinely assessing health-related quality of life allows for a considerably more comprehensive and all-encompassing understanding of its significance throughout the disease.

Because they are aware that these patient-centered outcomes will be utilised to raise healthcare quality, which is also our main objective, patients with head and neck cancer view questionnaires as an essential component of their treatment plans.

A Fifty Year Intrauterine Contraception Odyssey | Chapter 1 | New Horizons in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 12

Thermoplastic IUDs were the first type of modern IUDs, followed by copper- and subsequently progestin-based models. Many various sizes and types of IUDs were first produced because there were no established rules. There are now relatively few advancements in IUD research because of the severe rules. Because of this, it is doubtful that contemporary practitioners have my level of experience. This article, based on the experience of one researcher over a 50-year period, explains the advancements in IUD research from the inert plastic devices through the copper-bearing devices to the present progestin-containing IUDs. Numerous articles on a large portion of this event have been published in peer-reviewed journals. The usage of 15 distinct IUD types and its subtypes, totaling 30 different sizes, is documented in the article.

Study on Primary Adrenal Insufficiency (PAI): Experience in a Major Teaching Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia | Chapter 7 | New Frontiers in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 10

Primary adrenal insufficiency (PAI) in children is a rare but potentially fatal condition. Weakness, weariness, anorexia, abdominal pain, weight loss, orthostatic hypotension, salt desire, and hyperpigmentation are some of the current symptoms.

The goal of this research was to determine the cause of PAI in a big referral, teaching hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Materials and Procedures: This is a retrospective hospital-based study that took place between January 1989 and December 2014 at King Khalid University Hospital (KKUH). Medical records of a patient diagnosed with primary adrenal insufficiency were reviewed. The diagnosis was made based on the patient's medical history, physical examination, and low glucocorticoid levels and elevated adrenocorticotropic hormone levels (ACTH). The results of appropriate laboratory and radiographic tests were also examined.

Results: A total of 125 individuals with primary adrenal insufficiency were seen between January 1989 and December 2014. 85.5 percent of the participants had inherited diseases such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia and hypoplasia. Variable autoimmune-mediated etiologic diagnosis, which accounted for 13% of the cases, was also seen. Various laboratory and radiological investigations should be planned as needed.

Conclusion: Although congenital adrenal hyperplasia was the most common cause, congenital adrenal hypoplasia should also be considered. In some cases, determining the presence of PAI can be difficult, hence suitable serological testing is recommended.
