Impact of Podcasts on Enhancing English Vocabulary for Non-Native Speakers | Chapter 2 | Language, Literature and Education: Research Updates Vol. 6

A podcast is an audio file that may be listened to on a website or app on your phone, computer, or other device. It is comparable to a radio broadcast. Individuals would record their works and disseminate the audio online, akin to auditory blog entries. In today’s global world, a student needs to compete with the outside world to retain their professional career. In this process of attaining success, a non-native speaker needs to make progress in their language skills to compete with industry standards. As people are immersed in a technology-driven society, it’s laying a platform where students are encouraged to involve themselves and improvise their language skills with the help of English podcasts, which play an important role in language acquisition. Digital recordings called podcasts are a highly well-liked technical aid for language acquisition, particularly for English language learners. Podcasts are particularly popular with the younger generation since they are flexible and give language learners access to resources from anywhere at any time. These podcasts aid in the development of contextual vocabulary and the pronunciation of native speakers, which varies between British and American English speakers. This provides the opportunity to familiarize oneself with the correct pronunciation to meet professional requirements and foster a smooth working environment. Acquiring a list of vocabulary words may lead to pupils using them incorrectly; nevertheless, listening to podcasts can help students expand their vocabulary by selecting new words while engaging in an engaging narrative. These will assist the student in extracting words precisely from the context. Podcasts such as Podcasts in English, The English We Speak, ESL Pod, Better at English, Voice of America Learning English, English Class 101, Elementary Podcasts, Splendid Speaking, This American Life, Global News, etc., will reduce stress and improve active listening skills, which expands learning and reduces time. Thus, the mentioned podcasts will not only improve English vocabulary but also increase students' English Fluency and encourage speaking English confidently. In conclusion, podcasts are a popular technical instrument for language learning, particularly among English language learners.

Literary Genres in the Digital Age | Chapter 1 | Digital Crossroads: Integrating Humanities, Science and Technology Edition 1

Language is significant for education, cognitive development, creative expression and social interaction. Any language which caters to a large section of people is the preferred one. English serves the purpose.  English is the global language and window into the world etc. Therefore, the acquisition of the English language as L2 (Second Language) should begin at the primary level. Literature is used as the medium to teach language. There are different literary genres such as poetry, drama, essays, novels, fables, autobiographies etc. in the English language which are adopted to enhance language skills. In this digital age, it is easy to introduce these genres to the students. For example, dramas and novels can be shown on the screen and the learners may be asked to enact the same or to write the reviews which give direct experience to the students. There is a wide scope to improve vocabulary, pronunciation, usage, and fluency by using these literary genres with the help of gadgets like computers, LCD projectors, laptops, iPods, Kindles etc.  The exposure to these gadgets and technologies would create interest among the learners and get hands-on experience. This would result in enhancing language proficiency. Thus, the study of ‘Literary Genres in the Digital Age’ has significance in language acquisition. The action research is carried out to find out the relevance of literary genres in the digital age in English language teaching-learning. The research is carried out by observation and informal interviews.

Investigation of Technical College Students’ Perceptions of English for Specific Purposes Vocabulary Learning and Teaching | Chapter 7 | Modern Perspectives in Language, Literature and Education Vol. 10

The goal of this research was to look into the learning challenges and preferred teaching technique among Taiwanese junior college students studying English for Specific Purpose (ESP) vocabulary classes. Subjects were 232 students from Fooyin University's Junior College Division in southern Taiwan. The researcher presented the ESP vocabulary learning questionnaire to chosen nursing department students who had enrolled in the medical terminology course as a requirement. Throughout the semester, the participants' learning challenges, learning sources, and attitudes regarding ESP vocabulary were all monitored. The most challenging aspect of the poll for most participants was vocabulary abstractness, followed by pronunciation, word length, and spelling. To improve learners' motivation to study, effective ESP vocabulary teaching should be linked with authentic teaching resources. It is impossible to overlook the importance of improving pronunciation accuracy for English as a foreign language (EFL)/ESP educators. Furthermore, word morphology should be prioritised for ESP vocabulary learning, especially for EFL/ESP vocabulary learners. Another key challenge in launching an ESP programme is a lack of ESP instructors. It's difficult to find qualified ESP instructors because many language teachers believe they're unqualified to offer ESP vocabulary classes.

English and Mauritian Creole: A Look at How the Vocabulary, Grammar, and Syntax of the Two Languages Make Learning Difficult | Chapter 3 | Modern Perspectives in Language, Literature and Education Vol. 6

The goal of this study is to consider the many linguistic factors that contribute to Mauritian students' difficulty in learning English. Because Mauritius was once a British and French colony, the majority of Mauritius residents are bilingual. Up to Cambridge O'Level, both English and French are required subjects. The official language and the medium of education is English, however French is far more widely spoken and used. Mauritian Creole is also the majority of Mauritians' mother tongue. This linguistic predicament has a significant impact on English teaching and learning at both the primary and secondary levels. Students frequently face a variety of lexical and grammatical issues as a result of the linguistic differences between English and Mauritian Creole. Today, the various forms of ‘Englishes' that are proliferating around the world are making it more difficult for teachers to teach and learners to acquire this language. Despite curriculum limits, young learners are finding it increasingly difficult to overcome such gaps, while teachers are attempting to make English more engaging and contextual.
